Answers to Common Questions About This Publishing Business
Q. How much capital do I need?
Your initial investment for our system manuals, website, templates, mentoring, training and support is £15,000. Though not necessary you may also want to set up a Limited company to trade under which will cost approximately £300. Our unique business model will enable you to publish books without buying, holding and risking stock so there is nothing more to pay. Traditionally £15,000 would barely buy you a small print run for one book - today it will buy you a publishing business with unlimited earning potential.
Q. Is this a Franchise?
No. Although we will be providing many of the benefits of a franchise package, the publishing business we set up for you will be entirely independent with its own unique brand and style. Furthermore your operation won't be limited to strict geographic "patches". We are simply providing a bundle of systems, information and services to enable you to be up and running as a publisher as quickly as possible. We do require a small percentage of your sales income, however, to cover ongoing support, website hosting, marketing and further business development.
Q. How much income can I earn?
This obviously depends on the number and type of books you publish as well as your own attitude and commitment! However, as an example, our publishing business with 37 titles currently returns over £3,500 per month (£42,000 per annum) from sales through our distribution channels and will continue to do so with minimal input from us for at least 5 years. In addition to this we sell advertising and sponsorship packages for some books prior to launch which can return between £500 and £3,000 per advertiser and inject cash to help with promotion. The 5 bestselling launch campaigns we have run (which we also share with you) have produced roughly £43,500. Finally, our authors buy bulk copies (typically 50-300) to sell direct, to give to clients and to sell back of room.
Q. Can I Make a Good Return On My Investment?
Your Return On Investment is our number one priority which is why we have priced our opportunity so realistically. Being able to make a return on your investment and get into profit as quickly as possible is essential for your long term success. We will do all in our power to support you in recovering, if not exceeding, your initial outlay within the first year.
Q. Can You Guarantee My Financial Success?
Be wary of anyone who promises this! No one can guarantee your success in business, but you are far more likely to achieve it with our support and the well established and proven business systems we share. We will do all in our power to make you profitable within your first year but the final responsibility will always be yours.
Q. Is this a full time business?
Yes and No.
Initially, during the "list building" phase of your business, you will be working very hard to sign up new authors and get their rough manuscripts into publication. During this phase you will almost certainly be working harder and longer than many of your friends. You could say year 1 is more like a full time and half business and you might even consider calling in the help of a family member or spouse.
However, once you have built enough critical mass (I would say more than 12 books) your business will continue to produce a healthy return from your distribution channels for minimal effort from you. In fact, you would probably coast along quite nicely for upto 5 years with just 1 day a week.
At this stage you have a choice. If you are happy with your monthly income you can continue to relax and reduce your publishing output to a minimum. If you're hungry for more you can continue to work hard to double, triple or even quadruple your publishing output. The second option will ensure you enjoy the benefits of an increasingly large ongoing monthly income.
Q. Where do I keep my stock?
The beauty of our publishing model is that you don't have to hold any stock! The books are printed to order and in most cases distributed and shipped to buyers automatically. The first time you're even aware the book even exists is when you start getting your monthly cheques from the printer/distributor.
Q. Do you have any age requirements?
As we started our own business when one director was just 19 we know that successful entrepreneurs come in all shapes, sizes and ages. As such, we welcome applications from dedicated, professional and motivated people of any age.
Q. Do I need to be a salesperson?
There is no face-to-face selling involved but you will need to be able to communicate clearly with authors, printers and other people involved in your publishing business. We provide detailed information on the marketing side of things so all you need to do is execute the plans to improve sales for your authors and your business.
Q. Do I need to have any experience in publishing?
A publishing background is not a requirement although a high level of literacy and good english skills will make your life a whole lot easier. It will also help if you are relatively skilled in the use of Microsoft Word and the internet, although we provide copy editing, design and typesetting services to business owners who prefer to focus on business.
Q. What other things will I need in addition to a Publishing Business in a Box?
- An author (and more later) - we'll help you get started
- A business bank account - so you have somewhere to put all the money you'll be making
- A PayPal account - the simplest way to send and receive money online
- Microsoft Word - to be able to use our templates and typeset your books
- Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or later - to provide the printer with print-ready manuscripts
- A computer with internet access
- A good work ethic and the will to succeed
